Tamale Central By-Election: PNC, LPG Withdrawals Applauded by NDC’s Alidu Seidu

The Tamale Central by-election has taken a dramatic turn as the People’s National Convention (PNC) and Liberal Party of Ghana (LPG) candidates withdrew shortly after filing their nominations, leaving National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Prof. Alidu Seidu as the sole contender.

Speaking on TV3’s Hot Issues monitored by Voice Of Buluk on Sunday, September 14, Prof. Seidu praised the decision, noting that it would save the country valuable resources. “We don’t have to run an election where the outcome is already clear,” he said, referencing both the tragic passing of Dr. Murtala and personal reasons cited by the withdrawn candidates.

The Electoral Commission (EC) responded by invoking Article 50(2) of the 1992 Constitution, which mandates a 10-day extension for new nominations when only one candidate remains. The EC confirmed that nominations will be accepted at the Tamale Metropolitan Office from September 12 to 21, between 9:00 am–12:00 pm and 2:00 pm–5:00 pm daily.

This development has reshaped the political landscape in Tamale Central, potentially setting the stage for an uncontested victory for the NDC candidate unless new challengers emerge within the extended nomination window.
