Residents and traders in Fumbisi are expressing growing concern over a deteriorating public toilet facility and an overflowing rubbish dump located a few meters away from the Fumbisi market, warning that the situation poses a serious public health threat.
The facility, originally constructed to serve buyers and sellers at the busy market center, has reportedly been left in a deplorable state due to poor maintenance and neglect. According to residents, the condition of the toilet facility has worsened over time, making it unsafe for public use.
When reporters from Voice of BULUK visited the area, they observed that several concrete slabs covering the manholes had broken, exposing users to danger and increasing fears of possible accidents.
Residents say the situation has persisted for a long period without any visible intervention from sanitation authorities or local officials.
Adding to the growing concern is a large rubbish dump situated directly behind the toilet facility. The dump site, according to residents, has become a breeding ground for flies, mosquitoes, and other disease-causing organisms.
Reporters at the scene described the stench from the area as unbearable, with heaps of waste scattered across the site. Residents further alleged that the dump receives all forms of waste, including medical waste from nearby drug stores, raising fears of possible contamination and disease transmission.
Some residents who spoke to Voice of BULUK said they live in constant fear, especially during rainfall.
“When it rains, the water carries the rubbish and sometimes faeces into our compounds,” one resident lamented.
According to community members, the worsening sanitation conditions are making life difficult for households located around the area. Parents are particularly worried about the safety and health of their children due to the risk of infections and possible disease outbreaks.
The situation is made even more alarming by the fact that the dump site and toilet facility are surrounded by residential buildings. Drinking spots and food vending businesses also operate close to the area, exposing both residents and customers to potential health hazards.
Residents are therefore calling on sanitation officers and relevant authorities to immediately intervene by clearing the rubbish dump, rehabilitating the toilet facility, and implementing proper waste management measures before the situation escalates into a public health emergency.
The incident has once again brought renewed attention to sanitation challenges confronting many communities across Ghana, where poor waste disposal and neglected public facilities continue to threaten public health and environmental safety.
