President John Dramani Mahama has officially launched his government’s flagship infrastructure initiative, the Big Push Programme, aimed at transforming Ghana’s road network and addressing the country’s long-standing infrastructure deficit.
The launch took place in Accra on Tuesday, September 16, 2025, where the President also cut sod for several major road projects in the Greater Accra Region.
The Big Push Programme, first proposed during the 2020 election campaign and revived following President Mahama’s re-election in 2024, represents the government’s largest single intervention in Ghana’s road sector. The initiative will see an investment of GH¢13.85 billion (US$892.9 million) to boost road infrastructure nationwide.
Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya Road Project Gets 24-Month Deadline
As part of the launch, President Mahama announced a 24-month completion deadline for the Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya road project, which will be executed by Oswal Investment Limited, a renowned Ghanaian contractor.
“I want to assure the people of Dodowa-Afienya-Dawhenya that you have one of the best local contractors working on your road. We’ve given him 24 months, but he has promised to deliver even earlier,” President Mahama said.
Road Minister Hails Bold Intervention
The Minister for Roads and Highways, Governs Kwame Agbodza, described the Big Push as a historic and bold intervention that goes beyond politics. He revealed that the Ministry currently faces a GH¢40 billion debt burden to contractors, yet citizens across the 16 regions have little evidence of what that debt accomplished.
“Despite the challenges, President Mahama has made a bold commitment to deliver the biggest single intervention in Ghana’s road sector,” Mr. Agbodza said. “The Big Push is not just a campaign promise—it is a transformative plan to improve lives and boost economic growth.”
The Minister further dismissed concerns about delays, assuring Ghanaians that the contractors are capable of delivering quality work within the stipulated timelines.
Transforming Ghana’s Road Sector
With this GH¢13.85 billion investment, the Big Push Programme is expected to improve road connectivity, ease transportation challenges, and support economic development across Ghana. The project marks a turning point in addressing the country’s road infrastructure gap and underscores the government’s commitment to delivering sustainable development.
