President John Dramani Mahama has appointed the Chief of Doninga, Nab Akanbeanab Akanbong, as Ghana’s new Ambassador to Ethiopia, describing the assignment as a critical diplomatic responsibility at a crucial moment in Africa’s political and economic development.
Nab Akanbeanab Akanbong was officially sworn into office by President Mahama during a ceremony held at the Presidency in Accra on Wednesday, where he was tasked to represent Ghana’s interests and strengthen the country’s diplomatic influence on the African continent.
The appointment has drawn attention particularly from the Upper East Region and the Builsa traditional area, where many residents view it as a significant recognition of leadership and service from the area.
Strategic Diplomatic Role
Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony, President Mahama emphasized the importance of Ghana’s mission in Ethiopia, noting that Addis Ababa hosts the headquarters of the African Union (AU) and remains central to continental diplomacy.
According to the President, Ghana’s role within the African Union is expected to grow significantly in the coming months as the country prepares for a possible leadership position within the continental body.
Mahama revealed that Ghana currently serves as First Vice Chair of the AU Bureau and has been nominated unopposed by ECOWAS to chair the African Union next year when leadership rotates to West Africa.
The President therefore urged Ambassador Akanbong to approach the assignment with dedication, professionalism, and a strong commitment to advancing Ghana’s diplomatic and economic interests across Africa.
Focus on Economic Diplomacy
President Mahama stressed that modern diplomacy goes beyond ceremonial representation and must focus heavily on economic transformation, trade partnerships, investment attraction, and regional cooperation.
He explained that Ghana’s Foreign Affairs Ministry has introduced measurable performance indicators for ambassadors abroad to ensure they contribute directly to national development objectives.
Ambassador Akanbong is expected to play a key role in strengthening Ghana’s engagement with the African Union and fostering stronger bilateral and multilateral relations between Ghana and other African states.
Pride for Doninga and Buluk
The appointment of Nab Akanbeanab Akanbong has also sparked pride among the people of Doninga and the wider Buluk area.
His appointment places another son of the Upper East Region on the international diplomatic stage and is expected to inspire many young people within the area to pursue leadership and public service.
As Ghana positions itself for greater influence within African diplomacy, Ambassador Akanbong’s role in Ethiopia is expected to become one of the country’s most strategically important foreign missions.
