Ghana’s First Lady, Lordina Mahama, has urged world leaders, faith-based organizations, and global stakeholders to work together in building a peaceful world that guarantees opportunities for growth and the well-being of future generations.
She made the appeal during the annual prayer service for peace and hope for children, held on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York on Monday, September 22, 2025.
The prayer service, facilitated by World Vision International, in collaboration with the World Council of Churches, Caritas Internationalis, the Episcopal Church, and other faith-based groups, comes at a time when children worldwide face uncertainty due to reduced funding for social programs and declining trust in institutions.
Protecting Vulnerable Children in Conflict Zones
Addressing the gathering, Mrs. Mahama highlighted the devastating challenges confronting children globally, particularly in Africa, where many are victims of armed conflict and humanitarian crises.
“These are precious lives destroyed by circumstances beyond their control,” she said. “When nations fail to implement policies that safeguard the home, strengthen communities, and nurture the youth, children suffer the most—losing parents, homes, dreams, and carrying scars that last a lifetime.”
She emphasized the need for prayer, decisive leadership, and global collaboration to create a world where every child is safe, protected, and empowered to reach their full potential.
The Role of the Lordina Foundation
Drawing from her own initiatives, Mrs. Mahama noted that through the Lordina Foundation, a non-governmental organization focused on supporting orphans and vulnerable children in Ghana, she has witnessed the transformative power of philanthropy.
“Through acts of compassion and global support, we can restore hope and give children the future they deserve,” she stated.
Call for Global Commitment
Mrs. Mahama’s call comes at a crucial moment as global crises—from wars to humanitarian emergencies—continue to strip millions of children of their childhood. She appealed for renewed commitment to policies and partnerships that prioritize peace, community resilience, and youth development.
Also present at the prayer service were Nana Oye Bampoe Addo, Deputy Chief of Staff in charge of Administration, and officials of the Lordina Foundation.
