In a powerful statement shared via his official X account, President John Dramani Mahama has renewed his commitment to ending illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, and called on all Ghanaians to join the fight to protect the nation’s environment.
“I’m determined to end galamsey, but I need the support of every Ghanaian,” the President declared.
Addressing civil society organizations (CSOs) and environmental activists directly, Mahama encouraged continued advocacy and public accountability:
“To the CSOs & activists, keep the pressure on. Hold us accountable. Your advocacy is welcome. We won’t hand poisoned rivers & destroyed forests to our children.”
The President’s remarks come amid growing concerns over the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining activities, which have polluted major water bodies and led to deforestation across several regions.
Mahama’s administration has pledged to implement stricter enforcement measures and collaborate with local communities, traditional leaders, and international partners to restore affected ecosystems and promote sustainable mining practices.
This renewed call to action signals a shift toward inclusive governance, where citizen engagement and activism are not only welcomed but seen as vital to national progress.
Ghana’s future depends on the choices we make today. And President Mahama is asking every Ghanaian to choose preservation over destruction.
