Ghanaian investigative journalist Godwin Asediba has once again brought pride to Ghana after being shortlisted among the final three for the 2025 Thomson Foundation Young Journalist of the Year Award, following his recent triumph as the winner of the 2025 BBC Komla Dumor Award.

The international award, held in partnership with the UK Foreign Press Association (FPA), recognizes outstanding journalists under the age of 30 from developing countries who demonstrate exceptional courage, integrity, and storytelling excellence.

This year’s competition saw 681 stories submitted by 227 journalists across 60 countries, with three finalists emerging for their exceptional rigour, impact, and bravery in journalism.

‘Troubled Morgue’: The Story Behind the Recognition

Asediba earned his spot in the finals through his investigative piece titled “Troubled Morgue”, a powerful exposé that uncovered the harrowing and dehumanizing conditions endured by mortuary workers in Ghana.

The report not only revealed the neglect within Ghana’s public health system but also sparked national debate and calls for urgent reforms in sanitation and healthcare policy.

Speaking about the recognition, Asediba said:

“This honour reaffirms the power of journalism to provoke reflection, compassion, and change. Troubled Morgue was never just a story—it was a voice for those society had chosen not to see. Being recognised on a global platform like this motivates me to keep shining a light where it’s often darkest.”

Global Recognition for Excellence

The finalists will travel to London in November 2025 for a week of newsroom visits and to attend the Foreign Press Association Media Awards, where the overall winner will be announced.

This nomination adds to Asediba’s growing list of international honours. In recent months, he made history as the first Ghanaian to win the Michael Elliott Award for Excellence in African Storytelling and also became the 2025 BBC Komla Dumor Award winner, an accolade that celebrates exceptional African journalists telling impactful stories with integrity and heart.

Championing Purposeful Journalism

At Media General, where Asediba continues to craft hard-hitting, human-centered stories, his success reinforces the organisation’s reputation for producing world-class journalism that resonates across borders.

Known for his fearless investigations into child labour, education inequality, human trafficking, and healthcare challenges, Asediba’s storytelling is defined by empathy, depth, and purpose.

Through his work, he continues to prove that journalism is not just about informing the public, but also about transforming lives.

“The truth matters. And I’ll keep telling it one story at a time,” he affirms.

A New Face of African Journalism

With his steady rise on the global stage, Godwin Asediba stands as a symbol of a new generation of African journalists—bold, uncompromising, and committed to stories that inspire change and uphold truth.

His achievements not only spotlight Ghana’s growing influence in global media but also reaffirm the continent’s potential in shaping narratives that move the world.
