President John Dramani Mahama has sworn in 37 new Justices of the High Court, charging them to uphold integrity, impartiality, and professionalism in their judicial duties. The ceremony took place on Thursday, October 23, 2025, at the Jubilee House in Accra.
The newly appointed judges took the Oath of Allegiance, Judicial Oath, and Oath of Secrecy before receiving their instruments of appointment from the President.
In his address, President Mahama described the occasion as a reaffirmation of Ghana’s commitment to the rule of law and a recognition that justice remains the foundation of democracy.
“This ceremony represents more than an appointment. It is a renewal of our faith in the enduring principle that justice is the fairness pillar of our democracy and that Ghana shall always be governed by law, never by the whims of capricious power,” President Mahama stated.
The High Court: The People’s Court
President Mahama highlighted the critical role of the High Court as the “people’s court,” where citizens encounter justice in their daily lives. He urged the new judges to resist corruption and bias, ensuring their decisions reflect only the law and evidence presented before them.
“Be incorruptible — not only in fact but also in perception. Let every citizen who appears before you believe that their fate rests solely on the evidence and the law, never on influence or connections,” he emphasized.
Justice as a Pillar of National Development
The President further linked justice to national development, stressing that good governance, investor confidence, and social stability depend on a strong and credible judiciary.
“Justice and development are not separate ideals; they are inseparable twins of the same mother. A nation that invests in infrastructure but neglects the rule of law builds its progress on shifting sands,” he said.
Strengthening Ghana’s Judicial Integrity
President Mahama commended the Judicial Council and the Chief Justice for their commitment to enhancing the efficiency of the judiciary. He expressed confidence that the new High Court judges would strengthen public trust in the legal system and contribute to upholding Ghana’s democratic values.
The swearing-in ceremony marks a significant step in expanding judicial capacity and ensuring timely and fair adjudication of cases across the country.
