Haruna Iddrisu Warns Against Indecent Hairstyles and Dressing in Senior High Schools

The Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has issued a stern warning against inappropriate hairstyles and dressing among students in all second-cycle institutions across Ghana.

Speaking at the 75th Anniversary celebration of Mawuli Senior High School in Ho, the Minister urged the Ghana Education Service (GES) and school heads to enforce discipline and maintain high moral standards on campus.

Addressing the growing debate on whether female students should be allowed to keep long hair, Mr. Iddrisu made it clear that the government will not compromise on school discipline.

“There is an ongoing debate on social media about haircuts, size and length of hair in secondary schools; we will not tolerate it today, we will not tolerate it tomorrow so long as we are moulding character,” he cautioned.

The Minister emphasized that discipline remains central to character development, warning that leniency on minor issues could lead to wider indiscipline.

“If we give in to hair today, tomorrow it will be shoes, and the next day, it will be the way they dress. Therefore, as part of our disciplinary measures, headmasters and GES are accordingly empowered to take full control of how students behave,” he stressed.

Government Takes Strong Stand Against Teacher Misconduct

Mr. Iddrisu also addressed concerns about teachers engaging in inappropriate relationships or misconduct with students, describing such behavior as unacceptable and punishable.

“There is a lot of growing indiscipline in our schools, some with even teachers abusing learners; we will not accept that. We will apply heavy sanctions to any teacher who wants to take advantage of a learner,” he declared.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating a safe, disciplined, and morally upright educational environment across the country.

Government Pledges Infrastructure Support

Commending Mawuli Senior High School for its contributions to Ghana’s human resource development, Mr. Iddrisu reiterated the government’s readiness to support the school with improved infrastructure.

He announced that the government would begin construction of a new dormitory facility for both male and female students, marking a new phase in the school’s development. The Minister performed a sod-cutting ceremony at the event to officially launch the project.

“We are committed to supporting schools like Mawuli to continue shaping the heads, hearts, and hands of young Ghanaians,” he said.

Celebrating 75 Years of Educational Excellence

The 75th Anniversary of Mawuli Senior High School brought together alumni, staff, students, and dignitaries from across the country. The event celebrated the school’s long-standing role in producing responsible citizens and national leaders.

Representing Vice President Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyemang, the Minister praised the school’s legacy and reaffirmed the government’s focus on promoting discipline, academic excellence, and value-based education nationwide.
