At the official launch of the Cedi@60 celebration, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson delivered a firm message on the importance of preserving the Ghana cedi as the nation’s sole legal tender. Speaking at the Accra International Conference Centre, Dr. Forson emphasized the government’s unwavering commitment to fiscal discipline and economic stability.
“We have remained steadfast in our duty to ensure a strong and stable Cedi,” he stated. “Our strong commitment to fiscal discipline has contributed to the strengthening of the currency.”
Dr. Forson called on all Ghanaians to play their part in safeguarding the cedi’s integrity, urging citizens to treat the currency with dignity and reject the growing trend of pricing goods and services in foreign currencies.
“Let me use this opportunity to remind Ghanaians that the US dollar is not our currency,” he declared. “The continuous pricing of goods and services in US dollars will only hurt us. Let’s stop it!”
The Cedi@60 event marks six decades since the introduction of the Ghana cedi in 1965, celebrating its role as a symbol of national sovereignty and economic resilience. Dr. Forson’s remarks echo broader efforts by the Bank of Ghana and the government to reinforce the cedi’s status and curb dollarization in domestic transactions.
