Parliament’s Appointments Committee to Vet Chief Justice Nominee, Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Today

The Appointments Committee of Parliament is set to vet Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, Ghana’s Chief Justice Nominee, at Parliament House in Accra today, Monday, November 10, 2025.

According to a statement issued by Parliament, the vetting exercise will begin promptly at 11:00 a.m. and will be strictly by invitation. However, the public is encouraged to follow the proceedings live on GH Parliament TV and across the official social media platforms of Parliament.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie: A Veteran Jurist with Over 30 Years of Service

Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie, who currently serves as the Acting Chief Justice of Ghana, assumed the position following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo. As the most senior among the nine remaining Supreme Court Justices, he was next in line to take on the judiciary’s highest administrative role.

Born on December 26, 1956, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie has over three decades of distinguished service within Ghana’s judicial and public service systems. His career has been characterized by professional excellence, integrity, and leadership across multiple branches of the legal sector.

From the Prisons Service to the Supreme Court Bench

Before joining the judiciary, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie served in the Ghana Prisons Service, where he rose to the rank of Deputy Superintendent of Prisons and Head of Legal at the Prisons Headquarters. He later transitioned to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) as Principal Inspector of Taxes and Head of Legal for the Eastern and Volta Regions.

His judicial journey began in 1992 as a Circuit Court Judge, later advancing to the High Court, then the Court of Appeal, before his appointment to the Supreme Court in 2008.

Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s educational foundation was laid at Konongo-Odumase Secondary School, followed by higher education at the University of Ghana and the Ghana School of Law, where he earned his professional law qualifications.

Within Ghana’s legal system, Justice Baffoe-Bonnie is widely respected for his expertise in constitutional law, taxation, prison administration, election law, and legal education. He has been an influential voice in judicial reform, ethics, and professional development within the Judicial Service.

He currently chairs several key bodies, including the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council, the Election Management Committee, and the Finance Committee of the Judicial Service.
