A fierce fire has broken out at Ability Square in the Adjiringano enclave of Accra, engulfing several commercial structures and triggering a large-scale emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS). The fire, which erupted in one of the busiest commercial pockets of the area, has sent shockwaves through the community as emergency teams battle to prevent widespread destruction.

Although the extent of damage to individual businesses is yet to be confirmed, the GNFS has described the situation as severe, prompting the rapid mobilisation of resources from multiple fire stations. Fire pumps from Legon, Madina, the National Headquarters, and the Adenta Fire Station were immediately deployed to fight the blaze, an indication of the scale and intensity of the inferno.

According to officials, the coordinated response aims to stop the flames from spreading to nearby properties within the high-density commercial zone. Firefighters were focused on protecting lives, containing the fire’s perimeter, and averting what could become one of the major fire incidents recorded in Accra this year.

Ghana’s Growing Fire Crisis

The incident at Ability Square comes at a time when Ghana is witnessing a troubling rise in fire outbreaks, particularly in commercial and residential areas of Accra. Recent GNFS statistics paint a worrying picture:

• 3,595 fire incidents were recorded between January and June 2025, marking a slight increase of 0.53% over the same period in 2024.
• Property losses skyrocketed to GH₵188 million in the first half of 2025, more than triple the destruction recorded in early 2024.
• Electrical faults remain a leading cause, driven by illegal connections, poor wiring, and the use of substandard materials.
• Human negligence, including unattended cooking, careless disposal of lit materials, and unsafe handling of gas cylinders, continues to contribute significantly to fire outbreaks.

The recurring fires in congested commercial hubs such as Ability Square highlight the urgent need for strict compliance with fire safety regulations, proper electrical installations, and improved access routes for emergency responders.

The GNFS is urging businesses and residents across Accra to adopt rigorous safety practices to help curb the disturbing trend of fire outbreaks across the country.
