The Government of Ghana has announced the imposition of a curfew on Nalerigu township and its surrounding communities in the North East Region as part of enhanced security measures to restore calm and maintain public order.
The curfew, which takes effect Thursday, December 18, 2025, will run daily from 5:00 pm to 6:00 am, according to a statement issued by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed, acting on the advice of the National Security Council.
Total Ban on Arms and Offensive Weapons
In addition to the curfew, government has imposed a total ban on the possession of arms, ammunition, and all offensive weapons within Nalerigu and its environs. Authorities have warned that any person found in possession of weapons or ammunition will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.
The Interior Ministry said the directive is aimed at preventing further escalation of tensions and safeguarding lives and property.
Motorbike Movement and Smock Wearing Prohibited
As part of the tightened security restrictions, government has also banned the movement of motorbikes, a measure often implemented in conflict-prone areas to limit the mobility of armed individuals.
The wearing of smocks, the sale of fuel in containers, and all forms of unlawful assembly have also been prohibited until further notice.
Security agencies have been directed to enforce the measures strictly to ensure full compliance.
Call for Calm and Non-Violence
The government has appealed to chiefs, elders, opinion leaders, the youth, and residents of the area to exercise restraint and cooperate with security personnel.
In its statement, government urged the people to adopt non-violent means in addressing grievances and to channel their energies into promoting peace and stability in the area.
Government Reaffirms Commitment to Peace
The Interior Ministry emphasized that the measures are preventive and temporary, intended to restore law and order while security agencies work to address the underlying challenges.
Government reassured residents that it remains committed to protecting lives, maintaining peace, and ensuring that normalcy returns to Nalerigu and the wider North East Region as soon as possible.
Residents have been advised to comply fully with the curfew and security directives while authorities continue to monitor the situation.
