As part of a strategic initiative to reduce traffic congestion and improve urban mobility during the festive season, the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has deployed 18 buses across major routes within the Kumasi Central Business District (CBD). This timely intervention is aimed at facilitating smoother passenger movement during peak morning and evening hours throughout the holiday period.
The festive season typically brings a surge in vehicular and pedestrian traffic in Kumasi, especially in commercial hotspots like Adum, Kejetia, Asafo, and Bantama. The KMA’s deployment of buses is designed ,to alleviate traffic congestion in the CBD,
provide reliable and affordable transport for commuters and shoppers and enhance safety and efficiency on Kumasi’s busiest roads
The buses will operate on high-demand corridors during morning and evening rush hours, ensuring that workers, traders, and holiday shoppers can move with ease. The service is expected to reduce the reliance on informal transport options and private vehicles, which often contribute to gridlock during the holidays.
This initiative is part of KMA’s broader vision for sustainable urban transport and smart city development. By offering structured, efficient public transport alternatives, the Assembly aims to improve air quality by reducing vehicle emissions, support economic activity by easing access to commercial centers and promotes public confidence in municipal transport systems
Early feedback from commuters has been overwhelmingly positive. “This is a great move by the KMA,” said Kwame Owusu, a daily commuter. “It’s made my morning trips faster and less stressful.”
KMA officials have indicated that the festive bus deployment could serve as a pilot for a permanent urban transport solution in Kumasi, with plans to expand the service based on performance and public demand.
