The family of Gilda Nortey, wife of former New Patriotic Party (NPP) parliamentary candidate for Korle Klottey, Valentino Nii Noi Nortey, has broken its silence, demanding justice following an alleged knife attack on her in the United States.
Gilda Nortey reportedly sustained multiple stab wounds during a domestic confrontation in Pennsylvania, an incident family sources say was triggered by threats of divorce. The attack has sparked widespread concern both in Ghana and among the Ghanaian community abroad.
“We Want Nothing Less Than Justice” – Family
Speaking to Accra-based Citi News, an uncle of the victim, David Gyapanin, described the incident as deeply traumatic for the family but said they remain resolute in seeking justice through the law.
According to Mr Gyapanin, the confrontation began as a disagreement that escalated when Gilda indicated she might file for divorce.
“They had a little argument, and my niece said she may file for divorce if things continue that way. My niece said Valentino threatened to either kill himself or kill her. He stabbed her three times,” he recounted.
He added that after the attack, Gilda pleaded with her husband to take her to the hospital.
“He agreed on condition that she would not mention his name,” Mr Gyapanin said.
Despite her injuries, Gilda reportedly managed to escape on her own.
“Fortunately, she had the car key and drove herself to the hospital where she works. She’s getting better. As a family, we want nothing less than justice,” he stated.
Family Insists Law Must Take Its Course
Mr Gyapanin stressed that the family expects the full application of the law in the United States, where the incident occurred.
“It happened in the States, and we want to believe that the laws there will be applied fully. You can’t marry someone’s daughter and, just because she wants to end the marriage, decide to end her life,” he said.
He warned that if justice is not adequately served in the US, the family would explore legal options in Ghana.
Police Confirm Charges, Bail Denied
Police in Lower Paxton Township confirmed that the incident occurred around 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, January 17, 2026, along Mayfair Drive in Pennsylvania.
First responders transported the victim to hospital, where she is reported to be in stable condition. Authorities also confirmed that the incident posed no danger to the general public.
Valentino Nortey, 41, a resident of Harrisburg, has been formally charged with:
- Attempted homicide
- Possession of an instrument of crime with intent to use
- Tampering with or fabricating physical evidence
Court records show that he was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge David Judy, who denied him bail. He is currently being held at the Dauphin County Prison and is expected to face a preliminary hearing on January 26, 2026, as investigations continue.
Case Draws Public Attention
The case has attracted significant attention due to Valentino Nortey’s political background as a former NPP parliamentary candidate, as well as renewed conversations around domestic violence, spousal safety, and accountability, particularly within diaspora communities.
As legal proceedings move forward, the family of Gilda Nortey says it will continue to pursue justice relentlessly, vowing to ensure the matter is fully addressed under the law.
