The Ministry of Transport has officially announced that Ghana’s primary aviation hub, formerly known as Kotoka International Airport (KIA), has been renamed Accra International Airport. The decision, effective immediately, marks a return to the facility’s original designation.

In a press release issued on Monday, the Ministry stated:

“The Ministry hereby informs the general public that the Government of Ghana has officially reverted the name of Kotoka International Airport to its original name, Accra International Airport.”

Restoring a Historical Identity

The Ministry explained that the facility was known as Accra International Airport before it was redesignated in 1969. The government believes restoring the original name is appropriate to align the gateway with its globally recognized geographical identity and historical roots.

The renaming comes after 59 years of the airport bearing the name of Lt. Gen. Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, a key figure in the 1966 coup d’état. Recent public discourse and advocacy from civil society groups argued that naming national monuments after coup leaders does not reflect the country’s modern democratic values.

Impact on Operations and Travelers

Travelers and airline operators can expect a seamless transition. The Ministry has assured the public that the name change will not affect:

  • Airport Operations: Ground handling and flight schedules remain unchanged.
  • ICAO Data: Crucially, the airport’s international code remains “ACC,” ensuring no disruption to global booking systems or flight navigation.
  • Safety Standards: Strict adherence to international aviation protocols continues.

The Roadmap for Implementation

The transition will involve a systematic update of all official touchpoints. According to the Ministry, the following will be updated in the coming weeks:

  1. Statutory Instruments: Legal documentation and official records.
  2. Physical Signage: On-site branding at the airport terminal and surroundings.
  3. Digital Platforms: Official websites and social media handles.
  4. Aviation Publications: Notices to airmen (NOTAMs) and international aviation directories.

Parliamentary Backing

This official announcement follows a legislative proposal introduced earlier this month. On February 3, Majority Leader Mahama Ayariga confirmed that the Minister for Transport would present the Accra International Airport Bill to Parliament to provide the necessary legal backing for the change.

“We are changing the name to reflect the name of the people who sacrificed their lands for the establishment of the airport,” Ayariga noted during a previous briefing, highlighting the government’s intent to honor the local community and national unity.

The Ministry of Transport has urged all stakeholders, international partners, and the general public to support the transition as the country rebrands its most vital gateway to the world.
