President John Dramani Mahama has reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to completing the long-delayed La General Hospital project, setting November 2027 as the definitive deadline for its commissioning.
The assurance was given during an inspection tour of the construction site in Accra, where the President expressed satisfaction with the pace of work and urged contractors to maintain momentum to meet the timeline.
Renewed Momentum After Years of Delays
The La General Hospital redevelopment, which began in 2020, has faced significant setbacks due to funding and payment challenges. These delays stalled progress for years before work resumed fully in 2025 following the resolution of financial constraints.
President Mahama emphasized that the government is determined to ensure the project does not stall again, stressing that consistent funding and supervision will be prioritised moving forward.
Critical to Accra’s Healthcare System
The prolonged closure of the hospital has placed considerable pressure on nearby facilities, forcing residents to rely on institutions such as Ridge Hospital, LEKMA, and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital for medical care.
According to the President, the completion of the new facility is essential to restoring accessible healthcare services to residents of La and surrounding communities. The hospital is expected to significantly ease congestion and improve emergency response capacity in the capital.
Expanded Capacity and Modern Infrastructure
Upon completion, the new La General Hospital is expected to feature a modern, multi-storey structure with increased bed capacity, estimated at around 160 beds, designed to address persistent challenges such as the “no-bed” syndrome in Ghana’s healthcare system.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh noted that the facility will serve over 50,000 residents in La and nearby communities, marking a major boost to healthcare delivery in the Greater Accra Region.
Government’s Broader Health Strategy
Beyond the hospital project, the government is exploring interim solutions to address emergency care challenges. Plans are underway to repurpose a COVID-era emergency centre at Burma Camp to handle urgent cases and reduce preventable deaths caused by delays in accessing hospital beds.
The President also highlighted the importance of preventive healthcare initiatives, including the Free Primary Healthcare programme, aimed at reducing hospital admissions through early detection and public health education.
The November 2027 deadline represents a critical milestone in Ghana’s effort to strengthen its healthcare infrastructure. With renewed political commitment and improved funding flow, the La General Hospital project is poised to play a transformative role in addressing healthcare access and capacity challenges in Accra.
