The leadership of Ghana’s Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) has held a comprehensive stakeholder engagement in Wa, aimed at preparing the public for the rollout of the country’s new vehicle registration number plates in January 2026.
The one-day capacity-building session, held on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, brought together journalists, the Ghana Police Service, the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), traditional rulers, and other transport-sector stakeholders. The engagement forms part of the Authority’s nationwide effort to sensitize key groups on the features, legal foundations, processes, and justification for the new number plate policy.
Enhanced Security and Improved Vehicle Identification
Delivering a detailed presentation, Kafui Semevor, the DVLA’s Director in charge of Driver Training, Testing and Licensing, outlined the advanced security features embedded in the upcoming plates. He emphasized that the newly designed plates will significantly improve public safety and help prevent the registration and circulation of stolen vehicles.
According to him, the improved number plates will also facilitate the accurate identification of vehicle owners while enhancing the DVLA’s ability to maintain a clean, updated national vehicle database.
“The new number plates are expected to improve public safety and security while also preventing the registration of stolen vehicles. It will also ensure proper identification of vehicle owners and update the database of registered vehicles in Ghana,” Semevor stated.
Registration Timeline Announced
The DVLA disclosed the phased timeline for the rollout:
- January 2026: Registration for first-time vehicles (new vehicles) begins
- June 2026 – December 2027: Re-registration for already existing vehicles
The extended re-registration period is expected to accommodate the millions of vehicles already on Ghana’s roads and ensure a smooth national transition.
Stakeholders Welcome the Policy
Participants at the session welcomed the DVLA’s approach, using the platform to seek clarifications, offer suggestions, and express concerns to aid in the seamless implementation of the policy.
Traditional rulers in attendance commended the DVLA for engaging communities directly. Many lauded the initiative and pledged their commitment to supporting the rollout in their respective jurisdictions.
A Step Toward a Modernized Transport System
The DVLA’s move to introduce enhanced number plates represents a key milestone in Ghana’s ongoing transport sector reforms. With improved security systems, clearer identification protocols, and a more robust database, authorities believe the new plates will improve compliance, law enforcement, and overall public safety.
The Authority is expected to continue engagements nationwide ahead of the official rollout date.
