The family of the late former First Lady, Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, has appealed for privacy as they mourn her sudden passing on Thursday, October 23, 2025.
At a brief press conference held at her Ridge residence in Accra, the family head, Oheneba Lovelace Prempeh, confirmed the news and expressed deep sorrow over the loss of Ghana’s first female presidential candidate and a respected political figure.
Mr. Prempeh disclosed that His Excellency the President had been officially informed of the passing and has since issued a statement confirming her death. He added that the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has also been duly notified.
“At this stage, we are in deep mourning and respectfully ask for privacy. All further announcements will be made by the government,” Mr. Prempeh stated.
A Trailblazer in Ghana’s Political History
Nana Konadu Agyeman-Rawlings, 76, was a towering figure in Ghana’s political landscape. She was the founder and leader of the National Democratic Party (NDP) and the first woman to contest for the presidency in Ghana.
As the wife of the late former President Jerry John Rawlings, she played a pivotal role in Ghana’s political evolution, particularly in advocating for women’s empowerment, social justice, and gender equality.
Her influence extended beyond politics, she was also a philanthropist and the founder of the 31st December Women’s Movement, a platform that championed women’s development and participation in governance.
