Founder’s Day Holiday to Be Observed on Monday, September 22, 2025

The Ministry of the Interior has declared Monday, September 22, 2025, a statutory public holiday in Ghana to mark this year’s Founder’s Day celebration.

In a statement signed by Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, the Ministry announced that President John Dramani Mahama, by Executive Instrument, has directed the nationwide observance of the holiday.

The annual holiday commemorates the birthday of Ghana’s first President, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, which falls on Sunday, September 21, 2025. In accordance with the 2025 amendment to the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act, when a public holiday coincides with a weekend, it is observed the following Monday.

Earlier this year, Parliament revised Ghana’s holiday calendar, introducing significant changes. These included the reinstatement of July 1 as Republic Day, the introduction of “Shaqq Day” after Eid-ul-Fitr, the removal of August 4 as Founders’ Day, and the restoration of September 21 as Founder’s Day.

Founder’s Day remains a moment to reflect on the legacy of Dr. Nkrumah and Ghana’s journey to independence, with nationwide activities expected to mark the occasion.
