At the 2025 Kimberley Process Ministerial Meeting held in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, the Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi Esq, delivered a powerful address urging global stakeholders to embrace reform and renewal in the diamond trade.
Representing the Republic of Ghana, the CEO acknowledged the Kimberley Process as a landmark achievement in curbing the flow of conflict diamonds. However, he emphasized that the nature of conflict has evolved beyond traditional warfare. “Today, diamond communities may not hear gunfire, but they feel the violence of exploitation, dispossession and exclusion,” he stated.
The speech highlighted the urgent need to redefine “conflict diamonds” to reflect modern realities. Ghana called on participants to move beyond stalled debates and take decisive steps to strengthen the credibility and moral authority of the Kimberley Process.
“Consensus must be a path to progress and not a recipe for paralysis,”Sammy Gyamfi Esq declared, urging delegates to prioritize convergence and incremental reform over perfection. He stressed that vulnerable populations must be protected while legitimate trade is safeguarded.
Ghana’s message was clear: the Kimberley Process must evolve to remain relevant. The country stands ready to collaborate with global partners to ensure that the diamond trade uplifts communities rather than perpetuates harm.
This call for action positions Ghana as a leading voice in the ethical transformation of the global diamond industry.
