Ghana has taken a major step toward strengthening security along its maritime borders with the commissioning of four modern patrol boats for the Marine Police Unit of the Ghana Police Service. The initiative, led by the Minister for the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak, is part of the government’s broader strategy to reinforce maritime safety, protect marine resources, and advance the nation’s growing blue economy.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony in Tema, the minister highlighted the vital role of the blue economy in Ghana’s long-term development agenda, emphasizing its ability to drive sustainable economic growth, job creation, and poverty reduction.
According to him, the new patrol boats symbolise the government’s strengthened commitment to securing the country’s waters and supporting economic activities dependent on maritime safety.
“The Ghana Marine Police Unit plays a crucial role in maintaining law and order in our maritime domain, preventing piracy, and protecting our marine resources. These new patrol boats will undoubtedly enhance the unit’s operational capacity,”
Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak stated.
He noted that the vessels will be deployed for surveillance, patrolling, rescue operations, and rapid response to emergencies. Their enhanced capabilities will enable personnel to prevent piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling, and other maritime crimes that threaten Ghana’s coastal and offshore assets.
The minister further assured the public that the government remains steadfast in its efforts to maintain peace and security across the country. He reaffirmed the Interior Ministry’s commitment to equipping security agencies with modern tools and technology to ensure a safer environment for all citizens.
The commissioning of these patrol boats forms part of the government’s wider reforms aimed at transforming Ghana’s security landscape through innovation, inclusivity, and strategic community engagement. It also aligns with national goals to maximise the economic potential of Ghana’s waters while safeguarding them from exploitation.
As Ghana continues to expand its maritime infrastructure and security operations, the new patrol boats are expected to significantly boost the country’s capacity to protect its territorial waters and support sustainable use of its marine resources.
