The Ghana High Commission in Pretoria has issued a strong advisory to Ghanaian nationals in South Africa, urging heightened caution as anti-immigrant protests escalate across key cities, raising fears over the safety of foreign nationals.

Rising Tensions Trigger Safety Advisory

The warning follows a wave of demonstrations led by groups protesting unemployment and the presence of undocumented foreign nationals. The protests, particularly in Johannesburg’s Central Business District (CBD) and other parts of Gauteng Province, have disrupted business activities and heightened tensions.

In an official statement, the High Commission cautioned that the situation poses a “heightened risk of tension, particularly toward foreign nationals,” urging Ghanaians to prioritise their personal safety.

Stay Indoors, Avoid Protest Areas

Ghanaian residents have been advised to:

• Remain indoors or in secure locations where possible
• Avoid protest zones and public gatherings
• Limit unnecessary movement within affected areas
• Refrain from engaging with protesters under any circumstances

The mission also encouraged nationals to carry valid identification at all times and maintain close communication within their communities.

Shops Shut, Businesses Disrupted

In some areas, Ghanaian shop owners have been urged to temporarily close their businesses to avoid potential confrontations or attacks. Reports indicate that earlier demonstrations in cities like Durban led to the closure of foreign-owned shops amid fears of looting and violence.

The protests come against the backdrop of growing concerns over xenophobic attacks in South Africa. Viral videos circulating online have shown incidents of harassment and violence targeting foreign nationals, including Ghanaians.

International concern has also mounted, with authorities in South Africa pledging to crack down on perpetrators of such acts and restore order.
