Ghana Meteorological Agency Issues Impact-Based Weather Warning as Rainstorm Approaches from Nigeria and Benin

The Ghana Meteorological Agency (GMet) has issued an impact-based weather warning as a powerful rainstorm system currently developing over Nigeria and Benin is expected to move westward into Ghana.

According to GMet, the rainstorm is projected to produce thunderstorms and rainfall of varying intensities across several regions in the country, including the Northern, North East, Upper East, Savannah, Upper West, Oti, Volta, Bono East, Eastern, Ashanti, and Bono Regions.

High Risk of Flooding in Low-Lying Areas

The agency has warned that the approaching rainstorm may trigger localized thunderstorms and rain-bearing clouds, leading to a high risk of flooding in low-lying and flood-prone communities. Residents in these areas are advised to remain vigilant and take immediate safety precautions.

The weather alert, issued at 0000 UTC and valid from 0130 UTC, cautions that the storm could be accompanied by moderate to strong winds, which may cause damage to weak structures, uproot trees, and affect power supply lines.

GMet Urges Public to Take Precautions

In its advisory, the Ghana Meteorological Agency urged the public to stay indoors during heavy rainfall, avoid seeking shelter under trees, and refrain from driving or walking through floodwaters. The agency emphasized the importance of monitoring weather updates and heeding local warnings to ensure public safety.

“Residents in flood-prone and low-lying areas are advised to move to higher grounds when necessary,” GMet stated, adding that the severe weather system is advancing rapidly across the country.

Disaster Management Agencies on High Alert

Authorities have been alerted to prepare for possible flooding and storm-related damages, especially in northern and central Ghana. The National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) and other relevant bodies are expected to coordinate response efforts should the situation escalate.

Stay Updated

GMet continues to monitor the storm closely and will provide regular updates as the system progresses.
