In a deeply solemn ceremony, the final six victims of the tragic August 6 helicopter crash were laid to rest today, Friday, August 15, 2025.
The burial took place at the Military Cemetery in Tse Addo, Greater Accra, following an interfaith funeral service at Black Star Square. The event drew a large gathering of government officials, military leaders, and grieving families from all over the country.
The six individuals buried were:
- Dr. Edward Omane Boamah, Minister of Defence
- Dr. Samuel Sarpong, National Democratic Congress (NDC) Vice Chairman
- Samuel Aboagye
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala
- Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah
Families and loved ones paid their final respects, laying wreaths in honor of the fallen heroes before the burial. Tears flowed freely as a nation mourned the loss of these distinguished Ghanaians.
Posthumous Promotions and Support Fund Announced
In a moving tribute, President Mahama announced posthumous promotions for the military officers who perished in the crash, acknowledging their service and sacrifice.
- Squadron Leader Peter Bafemi Anala was promoted to the rank of Wing Commander.
- Flying Officer Manaen Twum-Ampadu was promoted to the rank of Flight Lieutenant.
- Sergeant Ernest Addo Mensah was promoted to the rank of Flight Sergeant.
President Mahama stated that these promotions are not merely symbolic gestures but a reflection of the rightful place the officers have earned. He assured the public that the benefits for their families will reflect these new, higher ranks. The Chief of Defence Staff will oversee the ceremonial presentation of the new insignias to the families.
In addition to the promotions, the President also announced the creation of a Support Fund to provide for the children of the victims, ensuring their well-being and future are secured.
Two other victims of the crash, Dr. Ibrahim Murtala Muhammed (Minister for Environment, Science, Technology and Innovation) and Alhaji Limuna Muniru Mohammed (Acting Deputy National Security Coordinator), were buried on August 10.
