A tragic incident has shaken the academic community at the Ghana School of Law after a student died following a sudden medical emergency during a lecture.
Sudden Collapse During Academic Session
The incident occurred on Saturday, March 21, 2026, while the student was participating in a lecture. According to the Students’ Representative Council (SRC), the student unexpectedly collapsed during the session, prompting immediate intervention from colleagues.
Fellow students quickly rushed the victim to the Ridge Hospital, where medical personnel attempted to save his life. Despite these efforts, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.
SRC Confirms Incident, Expresses Grief
In an official statement released on Monday, March 23, the SRC described the incident as a devastating loss to the entire school community. The Council extended condolences to the bereaved family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased.
The SRC also acknowledged steps taken by school authorities to provide counselling and psychological support to students affected by the tragedy.
Concerns Over Emergency Response
However, the incident has raised serious concerns about student safety and emergency preparedness on campus. The SRC revealed reports suggesting that the school’s clinic may not have been accessible at the time of the emergency.
While these claims are yet to be fully verified, the Council described them as troubling and indicative of potential gaps in the institution’s healthcare response system.
Calls for Urgent Reforms
In response, the SRC has called for an urgent meeting with school management to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident and implement necessary reforms. Proposed measures include:
- Improved access to on-campus medical care
- Clear and efficient emergency response protocols
- Increased investment in student health infrastructure
The Council stressed that safeguarding student health and well-being must remain a top priority.
The incident has reignited discussions about emergency medical preparedness in tertiary institutions across Ghana, with stakeholders urging stronger systems to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
As investigations continue, the death of the law student serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of accessible healthcare and rapid emergency response systems within academic environments.
