The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has seized a 2019 Lamborghini Urus from the residence of popular Ghanaian dancehall artist Shatta Wale, born Charles Nii Armah.
The seizure, which took place on Tuesday, August 5, is part of an ongoing investigation stemming from a request by the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI) and the United States Justice Department.
The Investigation and Asset Recovery
According to a press release signed by EOCO’s Acting Executive Director, Raymond Archer, the seizure follows a lawful search conducted in June at a home in Trassaco Valley Phase 1, Accra. The operation, led by EOCO’s Surveillance And Asset Recovery Unit (SARU), led to the discovery of the luxury vehicle.
The FBI and the Justice Department have linked the Lamborghini to the criminal activities of Nana Kwabena Amuah, who is currently serving an 86-month prison sentence in the U.S. for multiple financial crimes. The car is considered proceeds from his criminal enterprise.
Shatta Wale, a key figure in the Ghanaian music scene, reportedly requested that the seizure remain private, citing concerns that it would damage his brand. He was subsequently allowed to surrender the vehicle himself, which is now in EOCO’s possession. The press release also clarified that SARU officers were armed as a standard safety protocol.
What’s Next for Shatta Wale?
The FBI and the Justice Department plan to issue a formal Mutual Legal Assistance (MLA) request to the Ghanaian government to have the car returned to the U.S. The vehicle’s value will contribute to the $4,743,443 restitution Amuah owes.
In the coming days, EOCO will invite Shatta Wale and a former senior officer of the National Signal Bureau (NSB) for questioning as “persons of interest” to assist with the ongoing investigations. EOCO’s final report may be shared with the U.S. authorities as part of the continued cooperation between the agencies.
This is a developing story. Stay tuned for further updates on the investigation involving Shatta Wale and EOCO.
