Ghana’s Electoral Commission Sets September 30, 2025, for Tamale Central By-Election

The Electoral Commission of Ghana (EC) has officially announced that a parliamentary by-election in the Tamale Central Constituency will be held on September 30, 2025.

The election follows the tragic passing of the sitting Member of Parliament, Hon. Murtala Muhammed Ibrahim, creating a vacancy in the legislature.

In a press statement released on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, the EC explained that the by-election is in line with Article 112(5) of the 1992 Constitution, which requires the election of a new representative when a parliamentary seat becomes vacant.

Nomination Process for Candidates

The EC has opened nominations for interested candidates, who can access forms from the Commission’s official website (www.ec.gov.gh) beginning August 19 to September 10, 2025.

Completed nomination forms are to be submitted at the EC’s Tamale Metropolitan Office between September 8 and September 10, 2025, during the hours of 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. and 2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. daily.

The Commission has outlined clear requirements for the nomination process:

  • Each form must be proposed and seconded by two registered voters of the constituency and endorsed by 18 additional voters.
  • Forms must be submitted in quadruplicate (four copies).
  • Candidates must provide two recent passport-size photographs on a red background.
  • Nomination forms must be delivered personally by the candidate, their Proposer, or Seconder.

Filing Fees Announced

The filing fee has been set at GH₵10,000. However, in line with efforts to promote inclusivity, the EC has announced a reduced fee of GH₵7,500 for female aspirants and Persons with Disabilities (PWDs).

EC’s Call to Orderly Participation

The EC, under the leadership of Chairperson Mrs. Jean Mensa, has urged all stakeholders, political parties, and constituents to adhere strictly to the guidelines to ensure a peaceful and transparent electoral process.

The upcoming by-election is expected to draw significant attention, as Tamale Central remains a key political constituency in Ghana’s Northern Region.
