The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS), through its Weija Sector Command, has arrested 11 foreign nationals for their alleged involvement in counterfeit currency printing and cyber fraud activities at a residential apartment in Tuba, a suburb of Accra.

According to a press release issued by the Service on January 7, 2026, the suspects were apprehended during an intelligence-led operation carried out on January 5, 2026. The operation was conducted by the Anti-Human Trafficking and Cyber Fraud Taskforce Unit of the Weija Sector Command.

The raid led to the retrieval of several items believed to have been used in the criminal enterprise. These include laptops, routers, mobile phones, fake US dollar notes, as well as tabletop printers and photocopying machines allegedly used for producing counterfeit currency.

“The suspects are currently in custody to assist with ongoing investigations,” the statement noted, adding that further actions will be taken in accordance with Ghana’s immigration and criminal laws.

The Ghana Immigration Service commended members of the public for their continued cooperation and support in providing information that aids law enforcement operations. The Service further urged citizens to remain vigilant and promptly report any suspicious activities involving foreign nationals in their communities to the appropriate security agencies.

In a strong caution to property owners, the GIS reminded landlords and estate managers of their legal responsibilities when renting out properties. The Service emphasized that harbouring illegal immigrants constitutes an offence under Section 52(1)(b) of the Immigration Act, 2000 (Act 573), and urged landlords to conduct thorough background checks before leasing their properties to foreign nationals.

Reaffirming its mandate, the statement assured the public that the Comptroller-General of Immigration and the management of the Service remain committed to safeguarding Ghana’s territorial integrity and ensuring strict compliance with the country’s immigration laws.

The arrest highlights renewed efforts by security agencies to clamp down on cybercrime and related transnational criminal activities, which continue to pose serious economic and security threats to the country.
