Haruna Iddrisu Emerges as Frontrunner in NDC Flagbearer Race for 2028

Education Minister Haruna Iddrisu has taken a commanding lead in the race to become the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s presidential candidate for the 2028 general elections. According to the latest poll conducted by Global Info Analytics, Iddrisu holds 29.8% of support among respondents, positioning him as the frontrunner in the party’s succession contest.

Trailing behind are NDC National Chairman Johnson Asiedu Nketia with 24.1%, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson at 18.4%, and former Chief of Staff Julius Debrah with 10.3%

Poll Snapshot:

Candidate
Support (%)

Haruna Iddrisu
29.8

Johnson Asiedu Nketia
24.1

Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson
18.4

Julius Debrah
10.3

The poll also explored alternative scenarios. In a three-way race excluding Ato Forson, Iddrisu’s support surges to 45%, while Asiedu Nketia garners 37% and Debrah 18%. Among core NDC supporters, Iddrisu commands 47%, with particularly strong appeal in swing regions where he leads with 48%.

However, if Iddrisu opts out of the race, the contest tightens dramatically. Asiedu Nketia and Ato Forson are nearly tied, with 40% and 38% respectively, suggesting a dynamic and competitive field.

Strategic Implications:

The poll underscores Haruna Iddrisu’s rising influence within the NDC and signals a potential shift in the party’s leadership trajectory as it prepares for the post-Mahama era. His broad appeal across regions and demographics positions him as a unifying figure, while the close margins between other contenders hint at a lively internal contest.
