President John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians that the recent intermittent power outages being experienced across parts of the country do not signal a return to the dreaded “dumsor” era.
According to the President, the outages are temporary and are part of a nationwide effort to upgrade electricity infrastructure and improve long-term power stability.
2,500 Transformers Deployed Nationwide
The government has procured and is deploying approximately 2,500 transformers as part of the first phase of a broader intervention aimed at strengthening the country’s power distribution network.
President Mahama explained that many existing transformers across Ghana are old and overloaded due to rapid population growth and expanding communities, making them inadequate to meet current electricity demand.
The President emphasized that the current outages are a necessary consequence of ongoing installation and replacement works. He urged the public to remain patient, noting that such interruptions are expected whenever transformers are being replaced or upgraded.
He further assured that affected communities would be notified ahead of planned outages to minimize inconvenience.
Improved Power Stability Expected
Authorities are optimistic that once the transformer rollout is completed, Ghanaians will experience significantly improved and more stable electricity supply nationwide.
The exercise is expected to be implemented in phases, with continuous replacement of outdated equipment to sustain long-term reliability in the energy sector.
President Mahama also highlighted the increasing role of local manufacturing in the production of transformers, describing it as a positive step toward building domestic capacity and supporting Ghana’s industrial growth.
He expressed optimism that Ghana could eventually produce all its transformers locally, further strengthening the country’s energy independence.
Context: Public Concern Over ‘Dumsor’
The President’s remarks come amid rising public anxiety over recent power interruptions, with many fearing a return to “dumsor”, a term widely used in Ghana to describe persistent and unpredictable power outages.
While recent outages have sparked concern among citizens and businesses, government officials insist the situation reflects a transition phase rather than a crisis.
The deployment of 2,500 transformers signals a major infrastructure upgrade, one that authorities believe will ultimately deliver a more reliable and resilient power supply for Ghana.
