The Ministry of Health (MoH) has issued a nationwide public health alert, calling on all Ghanaians to adopt strict hygiene practices to help prevent the spread of cholera following renewed concerns about possible outbreaks.

In a statement released on Tuesday, June 30, the Ministry advised the public to consume only warm, freshly prepared meals, wash their hands thoroughly with soap under running water, and maintain proper sanitation at both household and community levels. The advisory forms part of government efforts to curb the transmission of the highly infectious waterborne disease.

Public Urged to Prioritise Hygiene

Health authorities stressed that cholera remains a preventable disease, but its rapid spread is often fueled by poor sanitation, unsafe drinking water, and inadequate food hygiene.

The Ministry encouraged citizens to:

  • Eat freshly cooked and warm food.
  • Wash hands regularly with soap and clean running water, especially before eating and after using the toilet.
  • Drink safe, treated, or boiled water.
  • Keep food properly covered to prevent contamination.
  • Maintain clean surroundings and dispose of waste appropriately.

Officials also urged food vendors and restaurant operators to strictly adhere to food safety standards to reduce the risk of contamination.

Know the Symptoms of Cholera

The Ministry reminded the public to seek immediate medical attention if they experience symptoms associated with cholera. Early treatment significantly improves recovery and reduces the risk of severe dehydration.

Common symptoms include:

  • Profuse watery diarrhoea
  • Vomiting
  • Rapid dehydration
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Muscle cramps

Health experts advise that anyone showing these symptoms should report to the nearest health facility without delay rather than resorting to self-medication.

Government Intensifies Disease Surveillance

The latest advisory forms part of the Ministry’s broader public health surveillance and disease prevention strategy aimed at protecting communities from infectious diseases. Health officials continue to monitor the situation closely while working with regional and district health authorities to strengthen preparedness and public education.

The Ministry reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and appealed to community leaders, schools, market associations, religious institutions, and local authorities to support ongoing awareness campaigns.

Public Cooperation Key to Preventing Outbreaks

The Ministry emphasised that preventing cholera requires collective responsibility. Citizens are encouraged to observe good personal hygiene, maintain clean environments, and promptly report suspected cases to health facilities.

With increased public awareness and strict adherence to preventive measures, health authorities believe Ghana can significantly reduce the risk of widespread cholera transmission and protect vulnerable communities across the country.
