NAIMOS Arrests Four Soldiers Over Illegal Mining Operations in Tarkwa Nsuaem

The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has arrested four military personnel for allegedly engaging in unauthorized operations at Simpa Junction, Tarkwa Nsuaem District, Western Region.

According to a statement from NAIMOS, the tactical operation took place on Monday, August 18, during which the task force seized weapons and equipment from the suspects.

Preliminary investigations suggest that the soldiers were involved in illegal mining-related activities, posing as National Security operatives to conduct unlawful raids.

Reports indicate that such incidents are part of a growing trend where outlawed groups impersonate security officials to carry out illegal anti-galamsey operations in mining communities. These actions have fueled insecurity and disrupted legitimate mining businesses across Ghana.

Following their arrest, the four soldiers were handed over to the 2nd Infantry Battalion of the Ghana Armed Forces in Apremdo, Takoradi, for further investigation and possible disciplinary measures.

Authorities believe the arrest will bring relief to licensed small-scale miners, large-scale mining companies, and residents of Tarkwa Nsuaem who have long complained about the activities of unauthorized security groups.

Meanwhile, NAIMOS has reaffirmed its commitment to fighting galamsey (illegal mining), announcing intensified joint operations with the Ghana Police Service, Ghana Armed Forces, and other state agencies. The Secretariat emphasized that the government remains determined to protect the environment, water bodies, and communities from the devastating effects of illegal mining.
