A tragic accident near the Obuasi Airport area in the Ashanti Region has claimed the life of a member of the National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS), with four others seriously injured. The incident occurred on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, while the team was engaged in a major anti-galamsey operation aimed at combating illegal mining activities in the area.
In a statement released by Paa Kwesi Schandorf, Media Relations Officer at the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, the Ministry confirmed the fatality and injuries.
“Tragically, one member of the taskforce has been confirmed dead, while the remaining four sustained serious injuries and are currently receiving medical care,” the statement read.
Lands Minister Extends Condolences
The Ministry expressed deep sorrow over the loss of the frontline officer. The Minister of Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, extended heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased and wished the injured officers a speedy recovery.
“We remain steadfast in our commitment to safeguarding the welfare of all frontline personnel and will ensure they receive the utmost support and care.”
Full Investigation Launched
The Ministry has initiated a full-scale investigation into the circumstances surrounding the accident to determine what led to the tragic incident and to enhance safety protocols for future operations.
The NAIMOS team has been central to the government’s intensified efforts to clamp down on illegal mining, which continues to pose severe environmental and security threats across gold-rich regions.
The government says it remains committed to supporting the taskforce as they carry out these high-risk operations.
