AU Summit: Burundi’s President Ndayishimiye to Lead African Union in 2026

The African Union (AU) has finalized its leadership roadmap for the coming years at the ongoing AU Summit in Addis Ababa, electing H.E. Évariste Ndayishimiye, President of the Republic of Burundi, as the Chairperson of the Union for the year 2026.

In a dual win for regional representation, the President of the Republic of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has successfully secured the position of First Vice-Chair of the AU Bureau, signaling a strong return to continental leadership for the West African nation.

President Ndayishimiye’s election marks a significant moment for Burundi and the East African region. He is set to take over the mantle from Angola’s President João Lourenço, who will steer the Union until the 2026 transition.

The selection of President Ndayishimiye is seen as a move to maintain stability and continue the AU’s focus on regional integration, peace, and the “Silencing the Guns” initiative. Burundi’s upcoming chairmanship will be closely watched as the continent navigates complex geopolitical shifts and economic recovery.

Adding to the momentum of the summit, Ghana’s President John Dramani Mahama has been elected as the First Vice-Chair of the AU Bureau. This position is strategically vital, as the First Vice-Chair often works closely with the Chairperson to manage the Union’s agenda, mediate regional conflicts, and represent the continent on the global stage.

President Mahama’s elevation to the Bureau is being hailed as a testament to Ghana’s enduring influence within the AU and his personal commitment to pan-Africanism. Analysts suggest that Mahama’s role will be instrumental in driving the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA) agenda, which is headquartered in Accra.

The transitions come at a time when the African Union is pushing for institutional reforms and a more assertive voice in international forums like the G20. With Burundi set to lead in 2026 and Ghana holding a top-tier vice-chairmanship, the Bureau reflects a balanced representation of the continent’s diverse regions.

Leaders at the summit expressed confidence that the incoming leadership will prioritize the AU’s “Agenda 2063,” focusing on sustainable development, youth empowerment, and digital transformation across all member states.
