A devastating collision between a fuel tanker and a tipper truck on the Accra–Tema Motorway has claimed one life and left three others injured, triggering a massive emergency response from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS).
The late-night accident occurred between Saka Saka Park and Tanink Ghana on Monday, June 8, 2026, when a fuel tanker carrying thousands of litres of fuel collided head-on with a tipper truck. The impact sparked a fierce blaze that engulfed the tanker, sending thick smoke into the night sky and causing panic among motorists using the busy highway.
According to the GNFS, firefighters from the Tema Motorway Fire Station responded within minutes of receiving a distress call. Upon arrival, they found the tanker completely engulfed in flames. Additional crews from the Ashaiman and Tema Industrial Area Fire Stations, supported by a water tanker from the Ashaiman Municipal Assembly, were quickly deployed to reinforce firefighting efforts.
The fire was brought under control shortly before 1:00 a.m. and fully extinguished approximately 45 minutes later. The swift and coordinated response prevented what authorities described as a potentially catastrophic explosion, given the highly flammable nature of the tanker’s cargo.
Three victims identified as Kwabena Agyapong, Joseph Teye Quarshie, and Aaron Kyei sustained injuries and were rushed to Tema General Hospital for treatment before firefighters arrived at the scene. Their current conditions have not been officially disclosed.
Tragically, one person, believed to be the driver of the tipper truck, lost his life in the inferno. Firefighters later recovered the charred remains from the wreckage and handed them over to the police for further investigation and identification.
Authorities reported extensive damage to both vehicles. The fuel tanker suffered the complete destruction of all 26 tyres, while the front sections of both vehicles were severely damaged. An undetermined quantity of fuel was also lost in the blaze.
Emergency teams remained at the crash site throughout Tuesday to oversee fuel transfer operations and ensure the area was safe for recovery and clearance activities. Motorists were advised to exercise caution and comply with traffic directives as authorities worked to restore normal traffic flow on one of Ghana’s busiest transport corridors.
The exact cause of the collision remains under investigation. The incident has renewed concerns about road safety and the transportation of hazardous materials on Ghana’s highways, with stakeholders calling for stricter enforcement of traffic regulations and improved safety measures for heavy-duty vehicles.
The Accra–Tema Motorway remains a critical link between Accra and Tema and carries significant volumes of commercial and industrial traffic daily, making road safety on the corridor a matter of national importance.
