A routine police patrol in Dzorwulu, Accra, has led to the arrest of two suspected street robbers and the recovery of a cache of stolen mobile phones and cash, exposing what police believe to be a wider robbery network operating within the Accra Metropolis.
The Kotobabi District Police Command confirmed the arrest of Stephen Gletsu, 37, and Mohammed Sheriff, 20, following an intelligence-led operation conducted on Wednesday, January 14, 2026.
According to a police report, a patrol team on a service motorbike encountered the suspects riding an unregistered black Royal 125 motorbike. The two men were reportedly dressed in all-black clothing with black helmets, raising suspicion. Police further observed that the pillion rider was armed with a cutlass.
Upon spotting the police, the suspects allegedly sped off, prompting a high-speed chase. Officers fired warning shots during the pursuit, which ended near the Nigerian High Commission at Roman Ridge, where the suspects lost control of their motorbike and fell.
Although the suspects attempted to flee on foot, police successfully tracked and apprehended them.
A subsequent search led to the recovery of several suspected stolen items, including:
- One iPhone 15 Pro
- One iPhone 13
- One iPhone 12 Pro
- One Samsung A21
- One Infinix mobile phone
- One Infinix X6528 phone
- Three feature phones (Infinix, iel, and Nokia)
- One necklace
- Cash amounting to GH¢2,690.00 and USD 2
Both suspects sustained injuries during the arrest and were treated at the Police Hospital.
During interrogation, police say the accused admitted to committing multiple robberies across the Accra Metropolis, targeting unsuspecting victims. Several victims have since provided statements and positively identified both the suspects and their stolen mobile phones. Victims recounted being attacked with machetes before being robbed.
The arrests have since led to a broader breakthrough, with police confirming that four additional accomplices have been apprehended as investigations continue.
Stephen Gletsu and Mohammed Sheriff have been put before the court and remanded into police custody. They are expected to reappear in court on Wednesday, February 4, 2026.
The Accra Regional Police Command has reiterated its commitment to combating street robbery and ensuring public safety across the metropolis, urging residents to remain vigilant and cooperate with law enforcement agencies.
