The Speaker of Ghana’s Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Sumana Kingsford Bagbin, has been elected President of the African Parliamentarians’ Network Against Corruption (APNAC) at the Network’s 9th Biennial General Meeting held in Accra, Ghana.

In his new capacity, Speaker Bagbin will lead the continental body’s efforts to promote integrity in public life, strengthen good governance, and support Africa’s fight against corruption.

Bagbin Pledges to Strengthen Integrity and Accountability Across Africa

In his acceptance remarks, Speaker Bagbin expressed profound gratitude to the outgoing President and Board Members for their leadership and commitment to the Network. He acknowledged that their tenure laid a strong foundation for the new administration to build upon.

“The outgoing leadership has shown remarkable dedication and collective wisdom. We are grateful for their service and the strong institutional foundation they have left behind,” he said.

He pledged to work closely with member parliaments and partners to advance the mission and vision of APNAC, emphasizing the importance of unity, cooperation, and collective effort in combating corruption and promoting transparency.

“Only through unity can we strengthen our parliaments, improve accountability, and build a continent where integrity is the standard of leadership,” he added.

About APNAC: Africa’s Leading Anti-Corruption Parliamentary Network

The African Parliamentarians’ Network Against Corruption (APNAC) was established in February 1999 in Kampala, Uganda, following a seminar themed “Parliament and Good Governance: Towards a New Agenda for Controlling Corruption.”

APNAC serves as a continental platform for African parliamentarians to take an active role in promoting transparency, accountability, and anti-corruption reforms in their respective countries.

The APNAC Uganda Chapter (APNAC-U) was launched on August 1, 2000, and currently boasts over 100 Members of Parliament from various political affiliations. As a parliament-based organization, it operates from the Parliament Building in Kampala, serving as a model for other national chapters across Africa.

Speaker Bagbin’s Election Strengthens Ghana’s Regional Leadership Role

Observers say Speaker Bagbin’s election as President of APNAC is a recognition of Ghana’s continued leadership in parliamentary democracy and governance reform. His new role is expected to bolster Ghana’s reputation as a strong advocate for anti-corruption efforts in Africa.

Under his leadership, APNAC is expected to enhance collaboration among national parliaments, develop anti-corruption legislative frameworks, and promote ethics and transparency in governance across the continent.
