Stunning 10-Man Rennes Stuns Marseille with Last-Gasp Winner in Ligue 1 Opener

In a dramatic start to the Ligue 1 season, Rennes pulled off a stunning 1-0 victory over Marseille, scoring a last-gasp winner despite playing with only 10 men.

The win ended Marseille’s five-game winning streak in league openers and sent a clear message to the rest of the league.

Red Card Changes the Game

The match began with both teams showing early season rust. The first major chance fell to last season’s joint-top scorer, Mason Greenwood, who fired a shot over the bar from a promising position. The game’s dynamic shifted just after the half-hour mark when Rennes defender Abdelhamid Ait Boudlal was shown a red card for a poor challenge on Michael Amir Murillo.

With the man advantage, Marseille dominated possession for the rest of the first half. They came agonizingly close to scoring when Adrien Rabiot hit the post in added time.

A Tale of Two Goalkeepers

Even with a player down, Rennes continued to pose a threat. Their best chance came from a fierce strike by Valentin Rongier that forced a great save from Marseille’s Geronimo Rulli. The second half was a story of near misses and brilliant goalkeeping. Marseille hit the woodwork for a second time when Murillo’s header struck the post.

Marseille kept pressing for a goal, but Rennes goalkeeper Brice Samba was a wall. He made a fantastic save to deny Leonardo Balerdi and then stopped another attempt from Murillo.

Late Drama as Rennes Seals the Win

Just when it seemed the match would end in a scoreless draw, Rennes delivered a moment of pure magic in stoppage time. Ludovic Blas fired a brilliant strike past Rulli, clinching a sensational victory for the 10-man home side.

This was a phenomenal result for Rennes, especially against one of Paris Saint-Germain’s main title challengers. For coach Habib Beye, the clean sheet, his third in 11 matches, was a fantastic start to his first full season in charge.

Conversely, Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi will be thoroughly disappointed with his team’s inability to capitalize on their man advantage and convert their chances.
