A devastating road accident on the Sandema–Bolgatanga highway has claimed two lives and left five others in critical condition, reigniting public outrage over the poor state of roads in the Buluk area of the Upper East Region.
The tragic incident occurred Wednesday morning near Azimzim, a few minutes’ drive from Sandema town, when a mini car traveling from Sandema to Bolgatanga veered off the road under unclear circumstances.
One of the deceased passenger died at the scene, the other at the hosptial, while the five injured victims, including the driver, sustained varying degrees of injuries and are currently receiving emergency medical care at the Sandema Municipal Hospital.
Although there were no eyewitnesses to confirm the exact cause of the accident, residents and youth leaders in the area strongly attribute the crash to the deplorable condition of the road, which has long been a source of concern for commuters and transport operators.
Community members describe the road as narrow, poorly maintained, and dangerous, especially during early morning hours and the rainy season.
Youth Anger Boils Over
The accident has sparked renewed anger among the youth of Buluk, who say they are tired of losing family members and loved ones to preventable road crashes caused by bad infrastructure.
Some youth groups are calling on the government and relevant authorities to urgently fix the Chuchuliga–Sandema–Fumbisi–Wiesi road, warning that failure to see tangible progress will lead to a massive demonstration.
“If we do not see any real work starting soon, we will mobilize ourselves and organize the biggest demonstration Buluk has ever witnessed,” a youth reportedly stated.
A Growing Public Safety Crisis
This latest accident has triggered fresh conversations across Buluk, with residents demanding accountability from political leaders and road authorities. Many believe that without urgent intervention, more lives will continue to be lost on the stretch.
Road safety advocates argue that fixing the road would not only reduce accidents but also improve economic activity and access to healthcare across the district.
