Two suspected armed robbers have been shot and killed by police following a violent robbery attack on a Mobile Money (MoMo) vendor in Tema, in what authorities describe as a swift and decisive security response.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday, April 13, 2026, at Tema Community 5, where the suspects reportedly targeted a female MoMo vendor in a planned robbery operation.
How the Attack Unfolded
According to police accounts, the suspects arrived at the scene on a motorbike under the pretext of conducting a routine mobile money transaction. However, the situation quickly escalated when one of the attackers pulled out a firearm and demanded cash from the vendor.
The victim reportedly resisted, leading to a struggle during which she sustained a gunshot wound to the leg. The assailants succeeded in seizing an undisclosed amount of money before fleeing the scene.
Police Intercept and Shootout
A police patrol team on routine security duties responded swiftly and intercepted the suspects near the Tema General Hospital area. The suspects allegedly ignored orders to stop and instead opened fire on the officers while attempting to escape.
This triggered a gun battle between the police and the suspects, resulting in both robbers being fatally wounded. They were later pronounced dead upon arrival at the Police Hospital.
Items Recovered from Suspects
Police retrieved several items from the suspects, including:
- A 9mm pistol with ammunition
- An amount of cash believed to be stolen
- Multiple mobile phones and SIM cards
- Personal belongings linked to the victim
Authorities believe these items may also connect the suspects to other criminal activities in the area.
The injured MoMo vendor is currently receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in stable condition. Police say her condition is improving following emergency care.
Police Reassure Public Amid Rising Concerns
The Tema Regional Police Command has reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring public safety and combating armed robbery across the metropolis. Residents have been urged to remain vigilant and report suspicious activities promptly.
The incident adds to growing concerns over attacks on mobile money vendors in Ghana, a sector increasingly targeted by criminals due to the volume of cash transactions involved.
