Earlier today, Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang joined dignitaries and educators at the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho to celebrate the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize. The event, themed “Elevating the Status of Teachers for Quality Education,” was organized by the National Teaching Council in collaboration with the Ministry of Education and the Ghana Education Service.

Accompanied by senior officials including Hon. Alex Segbefia, Hon. Haruna Iddrisu, Hon. Dr. Ofosu Ampofo, and Hon. James Gunu, the Vice President reaffirmed the government’s commitment to education as a cornerstone of national development and democratic renewal.

“Education is at the core of our democracy, national development, and the government’s reset agenda. Teachers are central to nurturing the talent and skills that will drive our government’s key policies,” she stated.

A Legacy of Dedication

Since its inception in 1994 under President J.J. Rawlings, the Ghana Teacher Prize has honored the selfless educators who shape the nation’s future. This year’s ceremony spotlighted the enduring impact of teachers and the urgent need to improve their working conditions.

Vice President Opoku-Agyemang announced several initiatives aimed at strengthening teacher welfare:

Teacher Dabrɛ Initiative: A housing program targeting rural educators 
Digital Training Programme: Enhancing digital literacy across the teaching workforce 
Mental Health Support: Promoting wellbeing and capacity building for educators 

She also condemned all forms of violence and indiscipline against teachers, urging both educators and communities to uphold integrity and professionalism. The revival of Parent-Teacher Associations was highlighted as a key strategy to foster collaboration and shared responsibility in education.

Honoring Excellence

The Vice President extended heartfelt congratulations to all award recipients, with special recognition for Richard Tiimob of Savelugu Senior High School, who was named Ghana’s Most Outstanding Teacher.

“Teachers remain the architects of our nation’s future. Their work is as noble and essential as any other profession,” she affirmed.

As Ghana continues to invest in education reform, the 2025 Ghana Teacher Prize serves as a powerful reminder of the pivotal role teachers play in shaping a resilient, inclusive, and forward-looking society.
