Government Moves to Strengthen Media–Security Relations
The President revealed that his administration has begun taking concrete steps to improve relations between journalists and the country’s security agencies.
He said directives have been given to the Minister for Government Communications and the Minister for National Security to establish a permanent forum for engagement between the media and security services.
“This forum will foster mutual respect and help prevent future incidents of misunderstanding or violence involving journalists,” he stated.
Restoring Ghana’s Democratic Spirit of Media Freedom
Speaking under the theme “Self-Guarding Ghana: The Role of the Media in Promoting Security and Peace,” President Mahama reaffirmed his mission to restore the spirit of media freedom that defined Ghana’s democracy prior to 2017.
“My administration has chosen the path of restoring the spirit of pre-2017 Ghana, when freedom of expression, institutional respect, and journalistic safety defined our democratic experience,” the President said.
He emphasized that a free and independent press remains the cornerstone of democracy, peace, and national development.
Update on Election-Related Violence Investigations
President Mahama also provided an update on investigations into acts of violence against journalists and citizens during the 2020 and 2024 elections, which led to injuries and deaths.
According to him, investigations have been completed, identifying 21 individuals involved in the incidents.
- Four suspects have been arrested and granted bail.
- Five are currently on remand.
- Warrants have been issued for the remaining suspects.
“The Attorney General is reviewing the reports to determine appropriate legal action and compensation for victims or their families,” Mahama disclosed.
He assured the public that justice will be served, saying, “The victims deserve closure, and the perpetrators will face the consequences of their actions.”
President Urges Responsible Journalism
While reaffirming his administration’s unwavering support for press freedom, President Mahama also called on journalists to uphold responsibility, accuracy, and integrity in their work.
“Freedom must be balanced with responsibility. The credibility of journalism depends on integrity, accuracy, and fairness. Too often, the rush to break a story first results in unverified publications that damage reputations,” he cautioned.
The President encouraged media professionals to continue being the watchdogs of society, but with a strong commitment to truth, professionalism, and ethical journalism.
