The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has officially renamed its national headquarters in Accra as Jerry John Rawlings House, paying tribute to the party’s founder and former President, Flight Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings, whose influence continues to shape Ghana’s political landscape.
The historic ceremony, held on June 22, 2026, coincided with what would have been Rawlings’ 79th birthday. The event brought together senior government officials, party executives, members of the Rawlings family, and supporters of the ruling party to celebrate the life and legacy of one of Ghana’s most influential political figures.
President John Dramani Mahama, who led the ceremony, described the renaming of the headquarters as more than a symbolic gesture. According to him, the decision serves as a reminder of the values of integrity, social justice, accountability, and national service that Rawlings championed throughout his public life.
Speaking at the event, President Mahama emphasized that the greatest tribute Ghanaians and members of the NDC can pay to Rawlings is to continue advancing the principles and vision he stood for. He noted that the late statesman’s commitment to empowering ordinary citizens and promoting good governance remains relevant to Ghana’s development agenda today.
As part of the ceremony, a commemorative bust of Rawlings was unveiled at the party’s headquarters, creating a permanent monument to honour his contributions to Ghana’s democratic evolution and the growth of the NDC.

The renaming forms part of a broader commemoration organized by the NDC and the J.J. Rawlings Foundation under the theme, “From Revolution to Fourth Republic: The Rawlings Legacy.” The activities are intended to reflect on Rawlings’ role in Ghana’s transition to constitutional rule and his lasting impact on governance and political leadership.
Founded by Rawlings in 1992, the NDC has grown into one of Ghana’s dominant political parties and currently forms the government under President Mahama. Party leaders say naming the headquarters after Rawlings will help preserve his ideals for future generations and inspire continued dedication to public service among party members.
Members of the Rawlings family expressed appreciation to the NDC leadership for the honour, describing the occasion as a moment of remembrance, reflection, and recommitment to the values that guided the former President’s life and public service.
The newly named Jerry John Rawlings House now stands as a permanent symbol of the former President’s enduring legacy and his central role in shaping Ghana’s Fourth Republic and democratic governance.
