Akwatia By-Election: Electoral Commission Confirms Readiness Ahead of September 2 Polls

The Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana has confirmed its full preparedness for the Akwatia by-election scheduled for Tuesday, September 2, 2025.

According to the Director of Electoral Services, Benjamin Bano-Bioh, all logistics have been finalized and materials are set for distribution to polling stations.

“The Commission is ready for tomorrow. Today, what is left is for us to do the packaging, and then at dawn, we set out to distribute our materials to all the 119 polling stations. Voting kicks off at 7 o’clock in the morning at all stations. We are ready and poised to deliver tomorrow,” Bano-Bioh stated in an interview on Monday, September 1.

Security Measures in Place

Addressing concerns about election security, the EC official assured voters that the Ghana Police Service has pledged maximum security to ensure a smooth and peaceful election.

“Security, as we are aware, is the responsibility of the police. They have assured us, in the presence of all contesting political parties, that they will give their best. Everyone was concerned about what happened in Ablekuma North, but they have assured us that such incidents are behind us, and all measures are being put in place to ensure a peaceful election,” he emphasized.

Transparency and Party Participation

Bano-Bioh further urged all political parties to stay well-organized by keeping proper documentation and ensuring transparency during collation.

“If political parties are well organised, they can even compile their figures. If they do that, what they arrive at should match the collation officer’s results. There is no room for secrecy, everything is transparent. We also involve political parties at all levels of the process,” he explained.

Candidates Contesting the Seat

The Akwatia by-election will see a fierce contest between:

  • Bernard B. Baidoo of the National Democratic Congress (NDC)
  • Solomon Asumadu of the New Patriotic Party (NPP)

The NPP is determined to retain the seat, which became vacant following the passing of Ernest Yaw Kumi, the late Member of Parliament for Akwatia, who died on July 7, 2025.

With 119 polling stations across the constituency, all eyes will be on Akwatia as voters head to the polls to decide who succeeds the late MP.
