The Accra High Court, Criminal Division, has issued an injunction halting all outdoor and public events for the 2025 Teshie Homowo Festival following violent clashes that marred the celebrations earlier this week.
The ruling, delivered on August 29, 2025, does not affect the performance of traditional rites, which will still go ahead as planned.
Why the Injunction Was Granted
The decision followed an ex parte application filed by the Ghana Police Service and supported with an affidavit. The application was presented by ASP Benjamin Baafi, who told the court that the clashes erupted during the sprinkling of Kpokpoi on Tuesday, August 26.
According to police reports, violent confrontations broke out between rival youth groups from the Lenshie and Gbugblah clans, leading to chaos in the community.
Casualties Reported
The violent clashes resulted in:
- Two deaths confirmed
- Several others injured
- Heightened fears of renewed unrest in Teshie
The police argued that allowing public events to continue during the festival posed a serious security threat, hence the need for the injunction.
What Happens Next
While traditional rites associated with the Homowo Festival will continue, all other outdoor and public gatherings have been suspended until further notice.
The court’s decision is seen as a precautionary measure to restore peace and prevent further violence in Teshie as the community marks this year’s Homowo celebrations.
