Ayawaso East: Five Aspirants Face NDC Vetting Ahead of February 7 Primaries

Five aspirants seeking to contest the Ayawaso East parliamentary seat on the ticket of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) are expected to face the party’s vetting committee today, Wednesday, January 28, 2026, as preparations intensify ahead of the upcoming by-election.

The aspirants include Hajia Amina Adam, widow of the late Member of Parliament Mahama Naser Toure; Mohammed Baba Jamal Ahmed, Ghana’s High Commissioner to Nigeria; Mohammed Ramme, the NDC’s Ayawaso East Constituency Chairman; Dr. Yakubu Azindow; and Najib Mohammed Sani.

All five successfully filed their nomination forms on Tuesday, January 27, 2026, officially qualifying them to participate in the party’s internal selection process.

Vetting, Balloting, and Grievance Resolution

Speaking ahead of the exercise, the Deputy Director of Elections of the NDC, Tanko Computer, outlined the party’s roadmap for the selection process. He explained that the vetting would be immediately followed by balloting, after which any disputes would be addressed by the party’s grievance committee.

“We will be vetting the five of them and then proceeding with the balloting. After that, if there is any aggrieved candidate, the aggrieved committee will sit to hear that,” he stated.

Tanko Computer emphasized the party’s commitment to fairness and transparency, noting that the aspirant pool consists of four men and one woman, and that all necessary steps would be taken to ensure a smooth and credible process.

“We want the committee to sit, if there is a need, so that we conclude the process of the vetting and balloting, then we proceed with the printing of the ballot papers for the EC to conduct a primary for us on February 7, 2026,” he added.

NDC Primaries and By-Election Timeline

The NDC parliamentary primaries for Ayawaso East have been scheduled for Saturday, February 7, 2026. The outcome will determine the party’s candidate for the crucial by-election.

Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) has announced that the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election will be held on Tuesday, March 3, 2026.

The contest is expected to attract significant national attention, given the constituency’s political importance and the high-profile nature of some of the aspirants involved.
