The Ayawaso East Constituency in the Greater Accra Region has elected Baba Jamal Mohammed Ahmed as its new Member of Parliament following a peaceful by-election held on March 3, 2026.
According to official results declared by the Electoral Commission of Ghana, Baba Jamal, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured a decisive victory with 10,884 votes, representing 63 percent of total valid votes cast.
The by-election was conducted across 113 polling centres and recorded what observers described as a relatively low voter turnout.
Voter Turnout and Total Ballots Cast
Out of an estimated 50,000 registered voters in the constituency, 16,928 voters participated in the exercise.
Despite the modest turnout, the election process was largely incident-free, a development widely attributed to the significant security presence deployed across polling stations.

Independent candidate Mohammed Umar Sanda followed with 1,885 votes, while David Kanor and Ibrahim Iddrisu secured 104 and 43 votes respectively.
Heavy Security Presence Ensures Peaceful Poll
The by-election was widely described as calm and orderly. The substantial deployment of security personnel contributed to maintaining law and order throughout the voting and counting processes.
Prominent political figures from both major parties monitored the polls at various centres.
From the NDC, key figures including Samuel Ofosu Ampofo and Tanko Computer were present. On the NPP side, notable personalities such as Henry Quartey, Boakye Agyarko, and Hawa Koomson were also seen supervising activities at selected polling stations.
Filling the Parliamentary Vacancy
The by-election was necessitated by the passing of the late Member of Parliament, Nasser Toure Mahama, in January.
With this victory, Baba Jamal is expected to be sworn in by the Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, at the next sitting of Parliament to serve the remainder of the unexpired term in the 9th Parliament of the Republic of Ghana.
Political Implications
The outcome strengthens the NDC’s hold in Ayawaso East and reinforces the party’s presence in Parliament ahead of future national political contests. Political analysts suggest the result may influence party strategies in the Greater Accra Region moving forward.
As the constituency transitions to new representation, residents will be watching closely to see how the incoming MP addresses key local development concerns.
