Residents of Gbedema in the Builsa South District have demonstrated strong commitment to environmental sanitation by organizing a community-wide clean-up exercise as part of Ghana’s nationwide monthly sanitation initiative.

The exercise, held on the first Saturday of the month, brought together youth, elderly residents, traders, and motorists, who actively participated in clearing refuse, sweeping streets, and improving the overall sanitation of the community.

Community members say the initiative is not only about complying with government directives but also about protecting public health and promoting a cleaner environment for everyone.

“We pledge to sustain the President’s directive, but more importantly, we commit to keeping our environment clean in our own interest,” some participants noted during the exercise.

Supporting the National Sanitation Day Initiative

The Gbedema clean-up exercise aligns with the National Sanitation Day (NSD) initiative championed by John Dramani Mahama, President of the Republic of Ghana.

The programme was reintroduced in September 2025 to encourage citizens across the country to participate in community cleaning activities on the first Saturday of every month. The initiative aims to mobilise households, community groups, institutions, and businesses to take responsibility for keeping their surroundings clean.

According to the government, the initiative forms part of a broader effort to improve sanitation, protect public health, and instill a culture of environmental responsibility among citizens. It also seeks to empower local government authorities and community leaders to play active roles in maintaining clean towns and cities.

Historically, the sanitation campaign was first introduced in 2014 following growing concerns about unsanitary conditions and disease outbreaks. The programme encouraged nationwide communal labour to clean public spaces and reduce health risks linked to poor sanitation.

Gbedema Sets the Pace for Buluk Communities

Residents of Gbedema say they are determined to make their town a model for sanitation in Buluk, hoping that other communities in the Builsa traditional area will follow their example.

Participants emphasised that cleanliness should not be seen as a one-time event but rather a continuous civic responsibility that requires the involvement of every member of the community.

Local observers note that initiatives like the Gbedema clean-up exercise demonstrate how community-driven action can complement national sanitation policies, ensuring that government directives translate into practical improvements at the grassroots level.

With sustained participation and cooperation among residents, Gbedema is positioning itself as a leading advocate for environmental cleanliness in the Builsa South District and the wider Buluk area.
