Ghana’s Black Queens Clinch WAFCON Bronze: A Historic Victory!

Ghana’s Black Queens have made history, securing the bronze medal at the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON)!

In a thrilling encounter, they defeated arch-rivals South Africa’s Banyana Banyana 4-3 in a dramatic penalty shootout. This hard-fought victory marks the team’s first WAFCON medal since 2016, igniting celebrations across Ghana.

Tactical Shifts and Missed Opportunities

Coach Kim Lars Bjorkegren’s tactical decision to start Alice Kusi in place of Princess Marfo proved impactful. Early in the game, Ghana’s Doris Boaduwaa had a golden chance to open the scoring, but her shot went over the bar.

Alice Kusi also came close, narrowly missing a connection from Portia Boakye’s corner. The first shot on target came from Grace Asantewaa, forcing a spectacular save from South Africa’s Andile Dlamini.

Just before halftime, a goalkeeping error from Ghana’s Cynthia Konlan allowed Nonhlanhla Mthandi to give Banyana Banyana the lead.

Second-Half Comeback and Penalty Drama

The Black Queens emerged from halftime with renewed determination, creating several scoring opportunities. Substitute Evelyn Badu narrowly missed with a header.

However, it was Alice Kusi who became the equalizer, expertly connecting with Chantelle Boye-Hlorkah’s cross in the 68th minute to level the score at 1-1 and send the match to a tense penalty shootout.

In the shootout, goalkeeper Cynthia Konlan redeemed herself heroically, making two crucial saves. The winning penalty was calmly slotted home by Nancy Amoh, sealing Ghana’s well-deserved WAFCON bronze medal. This triumph is a testament to the team’s resilience, skill, and unwavering spirit.

What a moment for Ghanaian football!
